Jon fitted a new rotor arm and distributor cap to our 1985 Mercedes 500 SL. He measured out the HT leads, fitted them to the corresponding cylinders, secured them neatly in the clips and started the engine, which then ran smoothly on all eight cylinders. The air filter was refitted and secured before he carried out a road test. During the drive, he confirmed the car was running correctly but noted a squeak from the front brakes.

On return, Jon raised the car on the ramp and removed the front wheels. He stripped, cleaned and blew out the brakes, cleaned the discs, lubricated the pads and refitted them. The wheel and hub centres were also cleaned before the wheels were refitted and torqued correctly. After pumping the brake pedal until firm, another road test was completed, though a slight squeak from the brakes persisted.

Jon returned the car to the ramp and repeated the cleaning process on the rear brakes. He removed the rear wheels, stripped and cleaned the brakes, and blew out dust before attending to the calipers and pads. The pads were resurfaced on a flat surface, their edges chamfered, then lubricated along with the anti-squeal pads before being refitted. This was carried out on both sides, with any excess dust blown away. The wheels were refitted, torqued to specification and a final road test was completed, after which the brakes operated quietly and correctly.
