It is BBC Children in Need today!

BBC Children in Need is a UK-based charity that works to help children and young people facing tough times, whether that’s because their family is low-income, or because they don’t have the right equipment, support or services at home.

It was launched in 1980, and its famous mascot is Pudsey Bear, who wears a bandana.

What Does BBC Children In Need Do?

If a child doesn’t have access to basic things (like a bed, books, and someone to talk to), it can make their life extra challenging. Children in Need helps to fill those gaps for children. For example, the charity funds projects across the UK which can provide essential items, support services and opportunities for children.

Every November, there’s a big live TV appeal on BBC channels featuring celebrities, music, fun segments and fundraising. Schools, families and communities also take part via bake sales, dress-up days, fun runs, etc.

At school, you might take part in fundraising activities. With friends, you could organise a car wash or bike ride and be sponsored. At home, you might bake cakes, swap books, or sell some things you no longer use. You could then donate the money to Children in Need.

Huge Amounts Raised

In 2018, the charity officially announced that since 1980 it had raised over £1 billion to support children and young people. That’s a HUGE amount of money!
