John carried out a full inspection on our 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI, beginning with the vacuum pump for the central locking system located in the boot. It was found to be insecure, and the central locking was not functioning. On further inspection, disconnected pipes were found in the boot area. These were reconnected, though a vacuum leak remained. John identified another disconnected pipe on the offside of the boot, which was also reconnected. Following this, the central locking operated correctly.

He completed checks on the floor and interior, then raised the vehicle to secure a loose front subframe bolt using additional washers. The gearbox oil level was confirmed to be correct. All four wheels were removed to allow a thorough brake inspection, during which the rear discs were de-rusted. Tyre pressures were checked and adjusted accordingly.

The silver-painted areas in the rear arch were refinished, and coordination with the bodyshop was arranged to complete the final fit and security of the front nearside wing and valance. John resolved electrical issues at the nearside front by securing the indicator connections and carrying out solder repairs to the wiring for the nearside repeater light, which was then tested and bonded into position on the wing.

He tightened the rear bumper and adjusted both rear wheel bearings before refitting the wheels. A new bulb was fitted to the nearside reverse light and tested to ensure proper function. The vacuum pump in the boot was remounted securely, and a new earth wire was installed from the bonnet to the body.

Lastly, John removed unused wiring from under the bonnet and inside the vehicle, as it was not connected to any systems. He also attended to the battery terminals by removing them from the car and reshaping them to ensure a proper fit.

Jon completed the reshaping of the battery terminals on our 1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI in green and refitted them to the vehicle. He cleaned and secured all earth connections and bolted the earth strap from the rocker cover to the bulkhead. The front washer jets were unblocked and tested to confirm correct operation.

He then removed the heater control panel and took out the fan switch. The switch was stripped down, its internal connections cleaned, and it was tested before being refitted. The handbrake lever assembly was removed, stripped on the bench, and reassembled properly to ensure the pawl engaged correctly with the ratchet. It was then refitted to the car and the cables adjusted accordingly.

Jon also resecured the rear section of the roof lining and fitted both rear covers of the front seats into the bottom bar to ensure they were correctly fastened. He completed the necessary repairs and checked the front wheel alignment, making adjustments as needed and straightening the steering wheel.

Trim clips were fitted to secure the lower grille, and a road test was carried out to verify the steering and general operation, with all found to be in order. Finally, the vehicle was filled with P1 fuel.
