1929 Morris ‘Cowley’ Two Seater Tourer – by Roger Brown

 

‘If you attend Classic car shows and Village Fete’s around Woodbridge and surrounding districts, very often you would have seen this delightful vintage tourer on show there driven by its owner Rod Satchwell.

The Morris has a very interesting history. It was on of a batch sent by Morris Motors to Australia in the late 1920’s. there, the chassis was received by Holdens who manufactered the open two seat body you see on it today. The Morris is also unique in that it has a ‘rumble seat’ where normally the boot would be; unfortunately the ‘rumble seat’ will only take two small people comfortably or one adult uncomfortably.

Until the Morris was repatriated to the UK in 2008 the Morris had spent its entire life in Australia and is believed that the car had four owners prior to returning to the UK, also the exact mileage it covered during its life in Australia is also unknown.

Essentially it is a very simple car and is well within the capabilities of the 1920’s owner/driver to maintain and service. This is stated in the 1929 ‘Th Morris Car Manual’ and, if you have a chance to look at the Morris closely, you can see why the manufacturer could make this claim.

The engine is a very simple 1400cc four cylinder side valve unit rated at 11.9hp with a thermo-syphen cooling system. The engine temperature is indicated by a ‘Calormeter’, a visual temperature gauge mounted on top of the radiator; control of the water temperature is by mixture control on the steering column.

The gearbox is a three speed non-synchromesh with reverse gear. Gear changing is done very slowly. The clutch is depressed, the engaged gear is disengaged and the gear lever moves the next gear slowly into mesh; only then is the clutch released and the Morris moves on.

A notable feature of the car are the 10 spoke ‘Artillery’ wheels shod with ‘Dunlop balloon tyres.

All four wheels have brakes but the braking system rod actuated all round with the hand brake operating a separate pair of brake shoes on the rear brake drums.

Finally the suspension has cart springs all round with additional lever arm dampers to smooth the ride on 1920’s roads. A delightful car to see at shows and seen driven on the road.

Barons will auction off a pair of barn-find Jaguar E-type Series 2s during their July 17 auction at Sandown Park, offering an interesting prospect to those interested in a new project vehicle.

Expected to sell for £15,000-£20,000 apiece, the pair of Jags are a tempting purchase for anyone brave enough to take on the extensive restoration work required to bring them back to full health.

A 1969 manual example in red comes as a complete car with working engine but requires extensive body restoration, while a white 1970 automatic model with full-length Webasto sunroof comes with a triple-carburettor engine that needs an overhaul.

For those already working on an E-type project of their own, an entire bodyshell plus parts are being sold as a lot, expected to fetch around £6000-£10,000 come Tuesday.

Not every Jaguar E-type in this auction requires TLC aplenty, however. A matching numbers 1967 E-type Series 1.5 2+2 in Dark Blue, with 40,160 miles on the clock, is ready to drive away, MoT still in date. With no restoration needed in this case, £49,000 to £54,000 is expected to be where the winning bidder’s price will fall.

Barons has also embraced a summer theme for their July auction, with no less than 23 convertibles passing over their auction block on Tuesday.

A 22,300-mile 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda imported from sunny Florida tops the convertibles billing with a £60,000-£80,000 estimate, which handily comes with its original hardtop to cope with more traditional British weather.

Those looking for something older will likely be interested in a 1925 Riley Redwing, believed to be one of only four ever built. It features a 1.5L 10.8hp side valve engine mated to a four-speed non-synchro gearbox capable of 70mph, or 90mph with a downhill stretch of road and tailwind!

Those less flush with cash still have plenty of lots worth considering. A 1960 Austin Mini fitted with an early Cooper Silver Seal 998cc engine is estimated to sell for £13,000-£16,000, while some cars are estimated to go for as little as £1500, should a V6-powered Rover 827 Sterling be of interest to you.

Reaching 46,000 thanks to the Instagram love at Olympia

We’ve had an amazing weekend at Olympia Historic Automobile Fair and Auction.

With our 1956 Jensen 541 taking pride of place beside the auction area, our 1972 Jaguar E-Type V12 attracting the largest crowd, our 1972 Fiat 500L seemed to get the most photographic attention and our 1959 Austin Healey Sprite getting the best feedback from auctioneer Guy, the weekend couldn’t have been better for Bridge Classic Cars.

Not only did we receive fantastic feedback over the weekend but a quick search on Instagram showed that our cars were potentially seen by over 46000 Instagram followers. We can not thank the visitors of Olympia and the Instagram members enough for their amazing photos.

It’s lovely to see our cars being photographed and enjoyed by many others…
