As we continue to see the amazing progress being made on our 1905 Riley 9HP, meet Joby Carter, the incredible talent behind the colour transformation.
Joby is a traditional sign-writer, decorative artist, restoration specialist, author and teacher. He’s a master craftsman with his heritage decorative art skills including signwriting and the endangered craft of fairground art. As well as hosting signwriting courses, Joby is an artist in his own right, having had signwriting commissions for the Brit Awards, the English National Opera and Jools Holland, amongst others. He was also involved as a guest curator for Peter Blakeโs curation in the Museum of Everything.
Up until 2022 Joby was the proprietor of Carters Steam Fair, the worldโs largest travelling vintage funfair which toured from 1977 to 2022. Our award-winning vintage funfair was famous for its beautifully restored, authentically decorated fairground rides which dated from the 1890s to the 1960s.
Our very own Lily is a huge fan of Joby Carter’s work having followed him on social media for some time.
Joby has kindly sent through some photos to keep us up to date on the progress being made on our iconic 1905 Riley 9HP.
Our 1963 Bentley S3 Continental has been in the Bridge Classic Cars paint shop with technician Chris. He finished the panel levelling before masking the car up and applying polyfan.
Christian has been repairing the bulkhead of our 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe.
The roof frame of our 1 of 1 1905 Riley 9HP has been in the Bridge Classic Cars paint shop with technician Mauro.
Mauro painted the brackets in black before also painting the wood.
Our 2022 Bridge C Type Replica has been in the Bridge Classic Cars paint shop with Alan, who has been applying raptor to the rear wheel arches.
Lydia has also been working on our stunning replica. After fitting the steering wheel into the c type, she was able to make the final adjustments on the tonneau cover. She cut a slit and made a cover to fit the wheel, and still allow the cover to be fitted in case of rain etc.
Lydia then made a bag to fit the cover in and keep it nice and compact.
Mauro has been removing dents and completing filler work on our 1978 Triumph Stag. After this was complete, he went on to apply primer in preparation for painting.

He has been prepping the frame before applying epoxy primer ready for it to be painted black.
Paint technician Alan has been masking up and priming the inside of the bonnet of our 2022 Bridge C-Type Replica.

Our 2023 Toyota Hilux has been in the paintshop so Chris could repair a crack in the bumper and dent on the door. The truck was then primed and prepped for paint.
Chris has applied dtm gloss to various components of our 1956 Jensen 541.
While he was doing this, Paul finished wiring the loom into the dashboard and fabricated a gearbox mount. He then went on to fit the floor boards and fuel line before cleaning the gearbox tunnel ready for repair.
Once this was done, Paul modified the old bumper mounts to fit the new chassis.

Alan flatted and polished the body of the car, while Chris finished off some component painting.
The engine has been the centre of attention for Mauro and Rob lately.
Mauro painted some of the engine components in black satin dtm while Rob unmasked the engine block and thoroughly cleaned it. The crankshaft and rear seal plate were fitted and the steering column was built up with new bushes, switches and reconditioned hardware before being fitted to the car.
The door handles were fitted with new lock barrels and keys and fitted to the car.
Rob then made the dashboard mounting plates and fitted them to the rear of the dashboard.
The very first Jensen we restored, our 1961 Jensen 541S has been in the paint shop with Chris. He has rubbed down the damaged area, primed, and painted the sill.
Our 1975 Cobra Project has been in the fabrication bay with Christian.
Chris has been working out the seat position and making a drill jig for the seat rails. He then cut and welded in the box section for seat placement before cutting out the hoop positions and test-fitting them. He then cut them down to a more reasonable height.
The two Chris’ have been working on our 1963 Bentley S3 Continental recently.
The valance has been repaired and the body has begun the process of panel leveling in preparation for paint.
Our 2022 Bridge C Type Replica has been spending some time in the Bridge Classic Cars paintshop as Alan has been prepping the car before painting it in its new green colour.
As well as the main body of the car, Alan also painted the doors, boot lid, and other small parts.
Alan has been adding colour to the wheel arches of our 1976 Triumph Spitfire after it had raptor applied. As well as the arches, the last few small components were painted too along with the headlight bowls and bonnet corners.
Alan then flatted and polished both sides of the bonnet.
Technician Rob has also been working on our Spitfire. He has fitted the boot lid and the lid stay was blasted and painted before being fitted to the car too.
The front side lamps were fitted to the quarter valances before these were also fitted to the car. Rob then made the brake pipes and fitted them to the brake master cylinder and pressure valve.
Christian has continued making modifications to our 1975 Jensen Interceptor Mk3. He has modified the top of the door panel to get the panel gap, and he has also modified the cast front side lights to fit the valance nicely.
He then cut out the quarter panel grille holes to fit correctly, marked out where the seat belt mounts go, and welded in the mount bosses.
Lydia has continued her work stripping down the bonnet of our 1951 Austin Devon Pickup. Despite her hard work, there are still some areas that she cannot reach. As a result, Chris is removing the struts so Lydia can get to the final areas of paint and start removing rust.
Once this was done, Lydia managed to remove the last of the green paint from the bonnet. It was very stubborn, and there was a lot of pitting and rust underneath this. The bonnet requires repairs to the metal work and further rust removal.
Fabricator Chris has been working on our 1975 Jensen Interceptor.
He has been fitting up and modifying the front bumper brackets, as well as drilling and welding on the mount holes.
ย Chris also modified the door to suit the panel gaps. He then modified the quarter panel to suit the panel gaps too.
Our 1976 Triumph Spitfire has continued to make progress through the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.
Rob has fitted the vinyl trim around the screen frame and fitted the windscreen and top capping. He then fitted the lower steering column and the RH door.
While Rob was doing that, Alan was prepping, sealing and raptoring the bonnet, wheel arches, and lower bonnet panels ready for colour.
The reassembly of our 1976 Triumph Spitfire is making good progress. Rob has now fitted the rear seat pan sound deadening aswell as fitting new trim in the rear of the cockpit area.
While Rob was doing this, Alan was prepping the doors and bonnet for colour. He then applied colour and lacquer.
Paint Technician Chris has begun the process of fitting up our 1969 MGC GT. While doing this, he also added new rubber in the front quarter lights.
The Bridge Classic Cars PaintShop has been home to our very special 1939 Jaguar SS100.
While in there, Chris and Mauro have been working on the rear wing. Mauro prepped and primed the rear wing before fixing the dent on the wing.
Chris then painted the rear wing.
Our 1975 Jensen Interceptor Mk3 has been in the fabrication bay with technician Chris. He has been welding the front bumper as well as cutting the bumper mount holes.
He then went on to fit up and make the mounts for the rear bumper before fitting up the stone guards and fabricating and welding the mounts.
Our 1976 Triumph Spitfire has made a lot of progress recently. After having its body painted in Java Green, it left the Bridge Classic Cars paintshop and went back to Rob in the main workshop.
Rob has now begun the process of reassembling the car. After reassembling the rear brakes with new and reconditioned parts, the bodyshell was refitted and bolted down.
The new and reconditioned parts have also started to be fitted as the restoration of our classic Spitfire continues.
