One Owner Cobra For Sale For The First Time

RM Sothebyโ€™s is offering the legendary 1964 Hank Williams โ€œSnake Charmerโ€ Cobra for sale at their Monterey auction in August. This historic vehicle, celebrated by West Coast SCCA racers and Shelby enthusiasts worldwide, is available to buy for the very first time.

The story of CSX 2227 began in 1964 when a Princess Blue over red Cobra 289 Mk II was delivered to Norman Ford in Pomona, CA. Hank Williams, a WWII hero who fought in Normandy, played in the jazz and blues clubs of LA and worked as an ambulance driver, living east of Los Angeles.

Seeking a fast car for both weekday and weekend racing, Hank initially set his sights on a Corvette. However, during the Civil Rights Movement, local Chevrolet dealerships ignored him due to his race. Instead, he turned to a nearby Ford dealer where he found CSX 2227, a rare 1 of 3 Princess Blue 289 Mk II Cobra, and paid a deposit there and then. Despite some challenges in delivery, Hank secured the car, beginning a legendary partnership that lasted 60 years.

Hank drove the Cobra during the week and raced it on weekends, adding a removable hardtop and repainting it in Silver Mink, a 1964 Lincoln colour. His racing career with the Cobra earned him the nickname โ€œSnake Charmerโ€ from Carroll Shelby, along with a Shelby Le Mans Team shirt, which is also included in the sale.

CSX 2227 became one of the most raced Cobras, with nearly 400 races and over 260 trophies and awards (also included in the sale). Surprisingly, it retains its original engine, body, and chassis, displaying a patina from its extensive racing history. The Cobraโ€™s nearly 60-year-old Silver Mink repaint and red Naugahyde interior remain intact. It is one of the best-documented Cobras, with original build sheets, buyer forms, warranty cards, and competition licenses, and has been featured in numerous magazines, SAAC Club publications, TV shows, and even a Union 76 oil advert.

At 98 years old, Hank was still driving his Cobra. After a remarkable life, Hank โ€œThe Snake Charmerโ€ Williams passed away aged 99, leaving behind a legacy and a Cobra driven over 140,000 miles. This legendary Cobra, still in his name on the original 1965 title, presents a unique opportunity to own an unrestored โ€œtime capsuleโ€ Cobra 289 Mk II in โ€œas racedโ€ condition with single ownership from new.

  • Hank Williams, a decorated WWII hero, musician, and racing driver, secured one of three Princess Blue 289 Mk II Cobras in 1964.
  • Nearly 400 races and over 260 trophies and awards included, with the original engine, body, and chassis.
  • Includes original build sheet, warranty card, competition license, and decades of photos.
  • Hank Williams earned the โ€œSnake Charmerโ€ nickname and received Carroll Shelbyโ€™s Le Mans Team shirt, included with the car.
  • Unrestored, single-owner โ€œtime capsuleโ€ Cobra in โ€œas racedโ€ condition, offered for the first time.

As you can see from the images below, it’s looking great already!

Daimler 250 V8 PDI

Before our 1966 Daimler 250 V8 gets delivered, Jonn has been giving it a once over and found a couple of minor issues he wants to fix before it leaves us. Here are his notes:

Carry out pdi and minor items to attend to. Strip bonnet secondary catch. Reposition spring and resecure/test, ok. Remove driver sill cover. Remount brackets. Refit to car and drill out holes for brackets that hadn’t been fixed. Cut a section of new door seal and stick along sill edge.

Prepping A Porsche 914 For Paint

Our 1973 Porsche 914 has been in the Bridge Classic Cars Paint shop. While in there, Mauro has been stripping the car down and prepping it for prime. Once this was complete primer was applied.

C-Type Final Fit Up

Jonn has begun the final fit-up of our 2022 Bridge C-Type Replica. He fitted the rear reflectors before attaching the number plate. He then fitted and secured the boot lid cover.

The front grille and badge were then remounted.

PDI

Our 1971 MGB Roadster has been undergoing its PDI with technician Jonn. Here are his notes:

Carry out Pdi and road test. Adjust idle speed. Washers not working. Inspect behind dash and found pipes had come off the back of the manual pump. Reconnect and test, ok. Horn not working and switch faulty. Engine breaths a bit from pipe to atmosphere. Remove rocker cover and get Clinton to weld a pipe outlet to front corner and order a breather catch tank to be fitted.

Rub down area around outlet welded in by Clinton. Paint with Dtm matt black and leave to dry. Refit and secure, ready for breather catch tank to be fitted.

Fiat 1900 A Inspection

Classic car technician Steve has been looking at our 1952 Fiat 1900 A. Here are his notes:

Wheel cylinders either seized or leaking and contaminated brake the brake shoes. All parts have been removed and sent away for refurbishment.

Jacking mount corroded and require welding.

Exhaust system corroded and poorly repaired.

Picture of old frayed chassis to engine earth strap and new replacement.

Conquest Windows

Jonn has been fitting the window assemblies to our 1954 Daimler conquest.

As they both were hitting the A-pillar, Clinton modified them to get a better fit. The driver’s door window mount was drilled out and a nut and bolt were fitted to secure it.

Our Morgan Goes Into Storage

A couple of weeks ago, James Webber won our 2011 Morgan 4/4 with just over 1000 miles on the clock.

Along with the stunning car, an optional 12 months of free storage was also part of the prize that James was lucky enough to win.

As James lives in London, he has decided to keep the car in our secure storage facility for a while. He has family in our area so at some point in the near future, he will visit his beautiful low-mileage car safely tucked away in a climate-controlled Carcoon.

Congratulations again to James on winning our 2011 Morgan 4/4.
